Red Cross to host Help us Help event

ZANESVILLE - The community has the opportunity Saturday to enjoy music, win prizes and raise money for the Muskingum Valley Chapter Red Cross Disaster

Relief Fund during Saturday's Help us Help event. "It (the fund) depletes very quickly," said Marlene Henderson, director of readiness and development for the Red Cross. "We are constantly replenishing it." Money from the disaster relief fund helps with any kind of disaster including setting up shelters during the recent ice storm and aiding families who lose their homes to fire. "On average, we spend $800 to $1,000 per family and last year, we served 88 families," Henderson said. "We provide them with food, clothing and a lot of times, some place (temporary) to stay." The George Crawford Memorial Band noticed the hard work the Red Cross does and decided to plan the fundraiser to help it continue to aid those in need. "All of us, I think, have a certain charity we pick and try to help," said Dave Joseph, a member of band. "The Red Cross does so much good for people and is probably the least rewarded in terms of dollars, so our band decided to make it our cause and help them out." Help us Help will feature The George Crawford Memorial Band, a living tribute to former Zanesville resident, the late George Crawford, a rock, blues and funk musician who played guitar and bass, and its special guests The Suede-Tones and Wysteria Lane. There will also be an auction, 50/50 drawing and refreshments provided by Bryan Place, which is also donating the use of its facility.

"We will have some memorabilia stuff having to do with Zanesville to auction off and Bryan Place will put out a nice spread of appetizers and have a cash bar," Joseph said.
