Frogs on Hogs charity event set

The Steffanie Collings "Frogs on Hogs Poker Run" will be held Saturday, Sept.

26, starting from the Noble Farmers Market in front of Noble City Hall. Proceeds will benefit the Oklahoma Brain Tumor Foundation. Collings battled brain cancer for the last five years of her life. During her short life, she affected many people with her determination to survive and to make a difference for families battling cancer. Steffanie's Law, a bill requiring insurance companies to pay for routine health care of any patient participating in clinical trials, passed the Senate on the day Collings lost her battle with cancer, March 12, 2008. Since that time, Steffanie's mother and father, Tracy and Monty Collings, have continued efforts for passage of Steffanie's Law. In June, 2008, Monty Collings went to work for the Oklahoma Brain Tumor Foundation. "I wanted to do something to commemorate Stephanie's first anniversary," said Monty Collings. "Stephanie loved poker runs. She and her sister used to argue over who would get to ride with me when I went on one, so it seemed like the perfect thing to do." Participants in the poker run will leave the Noble Farmer's Market between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Sept. 26. A prize of $300 will be paid for the High Hand and $150 for the Low Hand. Additional prizes will be awarded including a drawing for the 50/50 prize, where the winner takes half of the total earnings. In most cases, the winner donates his or her earnings back to the charity. "Steffanie collected frogs," said Robin Stead, a friend of the Collings family who is helping with the Poker Run. "The acronym stands for 'Fully Rely on God.' That is the basis for the Poker Run theme Frogs on Hogs." Debra Kimball, who his helping with the poker run met Stephanie while writing an article about her for a magazine. Kimball had just been diagnosed with a brain tumor and she and Stephanie had an instant connection.

"There's a lot about having a brain tumor that stinks," Kimball said. "Nancy Thomason at the Brain Tumor Foundation was a Godsend to me. I'm a walking miracle, and so was Stephanie. I'll do anything that I can do to help."
