The Bathurst Harness Racing Club is pleased to announce that the 2009 Black Toyota Gold Crown Carnival charity will be the local Bathurst branch

of 'Can Assist Country People Caring for Country People'. The purpose of Can Assist is to provide assistance and care to cancer patients and their families through their network of branches and accommodation facilities. Each year more than $1.7 million goes directly to supporting people with cancer in rural NSW. The five ways Can Assist help country people with cancer are: direct financial assistance to country cancer patients & their families (ie transport, accommodation, pharmaceuticals & other bills, Care & accommodation in Sydney and Wagga for people who need support during their treatment in the city, programs & services that focus on health during & post cancer treatment and Support, information & co-ordination to access the myriad of cancer services and options/ The 12 months leading up to August 2008 the Bathurst branch of Can Assist provided $37 800.00 worth of financial assistance to local patients and their families, with all requests for help being confidential & usually come from the hospital social worker or the treating doctor.

Bathurst Can Assist President June Darke says &lsquoWithout this type of continuing support Can Assist would not be able to provide the high level of support we currently do'. Of the funds June says &lsquo Can Assist provides assistance for a large range of different requests. Assistance can be one off or can continue over a couple of months'.
