They're in heavy silk and shimmering satin. They have sequins and beads and rhinestones that shine. Some are ruffled or layered or gathered at the waist. Some are accessorized with sashes and scarves or are belted, even braided. They could be the fixtures in a runway fitting room or a ritzy specialty store. But they're actually the makings of a shop-till-you-drop formalwear frenzy to benefit charity and to help the budget-conscious buyer who's planning a night on the town. Just in time for prom season and June brides, Cranberry Township Community Chest is hosting a sale that organizers hope will raise several thousand dollars to benefit local service groups and charities in the township. Calling it the "Run for the Gowns," dozens of dresses will be sold on a first-come basis for $50 each.

"There are gowns that would have sold for more than $3,000," Mrs. Moran said. The price ranges from $250 to $3,500.
